Welcome to our BCS Grade 1/2 Website!

Hello Grade 1/2 families!

Yet another month has sped by, and we've tumbled tumultuously into the month of March. While the legend holds that if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb and vice versa, between the bouts of warmth and dumps of snow and cold, I'm not too sure which one it's being right now, let alone what it will be later!

Despite the ups and downs of the weather, and the common dumps of snow, March is still considered the first month of spring on the calendar. Even though it may look more like winter than spring outside my window, I know that warmer days are on their way, which fills me with anticipation.

Spring is finally when I get to go out into my garden and plant, an activity that has always held a sort of mystery to me. I've never lost that sense of wonder I had as a child, the sense of awe whenever I see those first sprouts poke up out of the garden soil.

Of course I've known for many years the process of how the seed splits open, and the tiny plant begins to unfurl and stretch it's way towards the sun.  What I still don't understand though, is why it does what it does. The spark that makes it move from stillness to life and growth. And that fills me with a sense of mystery.

Another thing that fills us with anticipation in Grade 1/2, is the expectation of holidays! The next two we get to celebrate in our class share this sense of mystery.  Legend states that St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach the people of Ireland about the Trinity, one of the great mysteries of our faith. Then, during Easter we celebrate the greatest mystery of all, how Christ, on the cross, was able to pay for not just all of my sins, but the sins of everyone, of every time, of the entire world. And that act of supreme selflessness and sacrifice changed me from stillness and death to life and growth.

While I understand and can explain both of these truths as well as my limited, human perspective allows, they contain a profound sense of mystery which is far beyond my reckoning. One, quite truthfully, I should let soak into my mind on a more regular basis. Because if I'm honest, time, busyness and familiarity far too often rob me of the mystery and wonder of my relationship with God, who He is, and the enormity of what He's done for me.

So, as we have fun in Grade 1/2, celebrating and learning about both these holidays and the truths we celebrate, I will be asking God to remind me of the great mysteries they share, and to help me share this wonder with our students.

Bible Memory Focus
March 2023

Peace
Peace has two important meanings of biblical significance. It is both the feeling of tranquility and calm, as well as the absence of, or freedom from war and conflict. At Easter, we celebrate how Christ's sacrifice has brought us the calmness of spirit that is only possible because of our reconciliation with God. In Grade 1/2, as we memorize these verses we will investigate how we can't have one of these parts of peace without the other, and how our understanding of this can spur us on to be peacemakers in our world.
